Clinical Information
The Fibrinogen test is used to measure the amount of fibrinogen in a sample. The concentration of fibrinogen is inversely proportional to the clotting time when a known amount of thrombin (in excess) is added to dilute patient plasma. Low functional fibrinogen levels may be seen in DIC, during massive bleeding, liver disease, fibrinolysis, thrombolytic therapy, in the rare congenitally deficient patient (afibrinogenemia), or patients with nonfunctional fibrinogen protein. Elevated fibrinogen levels can be observed in diabetes, inflammatory syndromes, or obesity, and may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and pre-thrombolytic states.
