Notes
Tumor Lysis Syndrome is a life-threatening condition often caused by a chemotherapeutic treatment that causes a massive release of intracellular contents into the bloodstream (mainly uric acid, potassium & phosphate). Rasburicase (Elitek) is a drug used to manage elevated uric acid levels. In Rasburicase- treated patients, uric acid is vigilantly monitored to verify efficacy. Because this drugs activity continues post-collection (in vitro), patient samples must be collected in pre-chilled tubes and rapid sample transport on ice to avoid falsely low results.
