Important Note

If result is greater than or equal to 2.0 mmol/L another Lactic Acid Level will automatically be ordered to be collected 4 hours after the initial result is completed. This reflex will continue as long as the result remains greater than or equal to 2.0 mmol/L for up to a total of 4 specimens.

Collection Instructions

Avoid the use of stasis (tourniquet) or having the patient pump their fist while drawing blood specimen. Store and transport on ice.

Consider severe sepsis if Lactic Acid is >2.0

Consider septic shock if Lactic Acid is >4.0
