Collection Instructions

Opend wound, ulcers, or sinus tracts: Obtain swab or aspirate of deep area, avoiding skin flora.


Closed abscesses, fistulas: Using needle and syringe collect specimen by puncturing cleaned skin until needle penetrates abscess. Aspirate material and submit in syringe with needle removed. Place sterile cap on syringe.

Unsuitable Specimens

Voided and cath urine, throat, nasopharyngeal, sputum (expectorated, induced, or ETT), bronchoscopy samples with exception of bronchial protected brush sample (PBS), vaginal, cervical, decubitus ulcers, stool, blisters, foot ulcers (unless surgical or diabetic ulcers), gastric and small bowel contents, gingival or any internal mouth surface, ileostomy and colostomy drainage, superficial wounds, large bowel contents (except for etiological agents C. difficile and C. botulinum), perirectal abscesses, pilonidal sinuses, scalp, skin, nonsurgical eye/ear.
