Cary Blair Medium filled to line (yellow orange top vial from stool pathogens kit)

Collection Instructions

Submit a walnut-sized portion of fresh stool in a sterile leakproof plastic container. If a delay of 1 hours or more is anticipated for the specimen to reach the lab, submit a portion of stool in Cary-Blair transport tube or enteric transport media. Fill Cary-Blair Tube to the line on the outside of the container, cap tightly and gently stir or invert to mix.

Turnaround Time

Prelim report at 72 hrs
Cold enrichment for 2 weeks
Final report at 2 weeks + 3 days

Daily

Sample Stability

Stool must be placed in a Cary-Blair vial within 1 hour of collection. Stable at room temperature for 2 days one inside vial.
NEVER refrigerate or freeze stool culture.
