Mayo Clinic Laboratories

Test Code LAB4613 ROTAVIRUS ANTIGEN

Specimen Type

Stool in sterile container or diaper

Collection Instructions

Rotavirus is seasonal and is the most frequent cause of gastroenteritis in children inbetween 6 months and 3 years.

Collect specimens during the acute phase of gastroenteritis at which time viral particles and antigens are excreted in large numbers. Peak viral counts usually occur 3-5 days after the onset of symptoms. Samples collected more than 7 days after the onset of symptoms may not contain enough rotavirus antigen to produce a postive reaction.

Patient should pass the stool into a clean, dry pan or special container mounted on the toilet for this purpose. Transfer a "walnut" sized stool specimen into a clean leak proof container.

Do not collect specimens in containers having media, animal serum, detergents, or preservatives, as these substances may interfere with the assay.
